The blood vessels in a youthful, well-nourished vascular system are flexible –readily expanding and contracting as a result of messages given to the vessels by the presence of nitric oxide. This elasticity allows your vessels to expand and deliver a healthy flow of blood throughout the body, providing nutrition to all of your cells. Where your vessels cannot function well your cells throughout your entire body will not receive optimum nutrition....despite how healthy your diet.

As we age, the walls of our arteries may thicken and become rigid, while at the same time, deposits of cholesterol-laden plaques can build up along the lining of the vessels. This process is commonly known as ‘hardening of the arteries’.

As the heart pumps through a now smaller opening in the vessel, the blood pressure rises and puts stress on the heart and other parts of the body. These are the prime conditions for cardiovascular disease.

There are other functions of nitric oxide. Notably your brain uses nitric oxide to store and retrieve long-term memories.

As a gas, your body cannot get nitric oxide from your food, nor can you body store nitric oxide, so it is essential that your diet provides you with the vital micronutrient precursors your body requires to manufacture nitric oxide on a continual basis.

Two key micronutrients are L-Arginine and L-Citrulline. L-Arginine is a naturally occurring amino acid your body uses to make nitric oxide and is found in proteins. L-Citrulline also is an amino acid found in melon fruit which your body uses to recycle into L-Arginine, which in turn is used to produce gaseous nitric oxide.
